Is Tag Heuer Connected Worth It Or Grossly Overhyped?

on October 15, 2016 at 5:00 am

Is Tag Heuer Connected worth it? Well, Tag Heuer Connected Watch is a sharply polarizing figure. Well, watch. Right off the bat, and at $1,500 (GBP 1,100), the Swiss Engineered timepiece is the ultimate definition of “expensive smartwatch”—at least the better-known kind of watch. But, apart from the hefty price tag, what more surprises can you look forward to from a Tag Heuer Connected watch.

Tag Heuer Connected price when reviewed: $2,695.00

Tag Heuer Connected

Tag Heuer Connected Design and Look

is Tag Heuer Connected worth it?It takes one look to see that the Tag Heuer Connected wasn’t meant for the same target market as the Moto 360 2 or LG G Watch Urbane or Huawei Watch 2 et al, and not even the Apple Watch can touch this. This thing is not only state-of-the-art awesome but it does make the Android and iOS brethren look bad, literally and figuratively both.

The Heuer Connected is big, a rather nice kind of big if you like them so. It is 46.2 mm in diameter and 26.2 mm thick, some 2.5 mm thicker than the Sony Smartwatch 3.

Your sense of style will determine if the Connected feels like a bulky show piece or a stylish accessory. On top of that circumference, you’ll find a 1.5-inch, 24-bit LTPS LCD display that is transflective and lights up a decent (360 X 360) 240 pixels.

So reading the time, text and scrolling about the menu will not be a problem for some.

Low Resolution Display

For others, though, the problem may be that a 240 ppi resolution is less than okay and is what you had for the iPhone 4, which was released a whole 5 years ago.

Of course, a sharp display sucks the lights off of the battery around the back, but then Tag Heuer could have been more creative with the chunky figure of the Tag Heuer Connected watch and dedicate more case estate for the battery.

After all, the price is uncompromising. Why compromise?

However, the screen is very, very well protected by the sapphire glass coated on top of it. Sapphire is pretty expensive to use like this, and maybe this also helps explain the price of the final product.

Tag Heuer Connected Bands

The company decided to spice things up a lil’ bit and make available a variety of color options for the band. While the default strap is a black rubber band, you can choose to swap this for a red, blue, orange or white one.

Again, for GBP 1,100 you don’t get a steel strap, which is quite a disappointment for a such a luxury item. Yet, the techy gadget does appear like a “real” Tag Heuer watch.

Overall Look

This is why: The whole unit is two-toned, making the unit to appear clean and elegant—and it should, because Hey! It is a Tag Heuer. The lugs, case, and back of the Connected are made of grade-2 titanium, which not only helps make the case for super attractive charm (and the price), but the build material help make the watch shockingly lightweight (and durable) compared to its size.

The Apple Watch and the ilk feel heavier in comparison. The angular carvings of the watch give it that tasteful, future-tech breeze to it.

The bezel is fixed and minute markers are emblazoned all around. From across a hall room you can tell an Apple Watch, or Moto 360 or Huawei Watch 2 is a wrist-worn tech gadget, but with the Tag Heuer Connected it’d need to come within arm length for you to tell that the display is a digital impression of the real thing—there are 3 TAG Heuer Carrera dials available.

Tag Heuer Connected Software and Performance

Yet, all that a GBP 1,100 Tag Heuer Connected watch can do, a GBP 236 Moto 360 2 smartwatch can do—almost much better. This comes from the fact that both run the same Google Wear OS software. And also because Tag Heuer wasn’t exactly getting into the smartwatch space, but just testing the market—probably out of feeling threatened or seeing potential—not sure. We say this in reference to the offer the company shelled out: Connected users can use the smart watch for two years and then return to trade it in for a mechanical timepiece with another GBP 1,100 in tow.

In fact, the only real difference between the Tag and other Android watches is how the Connected utilizes interactive counters to display bits of information within the chronograph sub-dials. The rest is an incarnation of the “normal” Google Watch in Swiss Made colors.

The battery is a 410 mAh power plant with the potential of running things for up to 25 hours depending on how aggressive you tag it. That is at par with other droids but trailing behind the Sony Smartwatch 3, which adds some 20 mAh more and special features to boost uptime by a significant margin.

Is Tag Heuer Connected Worth It?

Clearly, the goal of Tag Heuer was to entice the hardcore watch connoisseur. In fact, the Connected is for the wristwatch aficionado who’s curious about how smartwatches work—especially the one who needs to get his or her watch from their trusted Swiss watch brand.

And the fact that the company chose to avail the option of a trade-in for a mechanical piece after two years, may suggest that this target customer may not be all that interested in a smart watch anyway, and may just prefer a “real” watch.

The question is: Is that person you? Because then it would be so much easier to decide if the Tag Heuer Connected is worth it for you.
